Burglary suspect being escorted by two police officers to a patrol car

Report Number: 24-495

On January 28, 2024, at 10:18 pm, Culver City Police responded to a call for service of an alarm activation at a business located on the 5000 block of Uplander Way. Officers determined that two suspects had entered the business through the roof and noises coming from the building indicated that they may be attempting to break into a safe inside the business. Culver City Police Drone Team operators were able to determine that two suspects were still inside the business.

At approximately 11:30 pm, one suspect was taken into custody. The second suspect barricaded himself in the business and refused to come out. Officers patiently worked to de-escalate the tense situation for the next nine hours, attempting to gain cooperation from the suspect to surrender. Culver City Police worked tirelessly alongside additional resources from the CCPD Emergency Response, K9, Crisis Negotiation, and Drone Teams along with Hawthorne Police Department SWAT and the Culver City Fire Department to bring this to a peaceful conclusion.

At approximately 8:23 am, the second suspect ultimately surrendered and was safely brought into custody. A firearm was recovered from the scene that was believed to have been taken by the suspect from a secured location inside the business. The surrounding businesses on the 5000 block of Uplander Way were closed during the incident but have since re-opened. Both suspects were arrested and booked for burglary at the Culver City Police Department Jail.
